Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has announced plans to establish a pilot zone named “CryptoCity”, where cryptocurrencies can be used for purchasing goods and services.
According to an official statement published on May 29 on the president’s website, Tokayev made the announcement during the Astana International Forum 2025. He stated that the zone would serve as a legal sandbox to explore the feasibility and adoption of cryptocurrencies.
He said:
“We plan to launch a pioneering pilot zone called CryptoCity, where cryptocurrencies may be used for purchasing goods, services, and even more.”
Focus on Regulation and Technological Development
In recent months, Kazakhstan has taken several steps toward embracing digital assets. Kanysh Tuleushin, the First Vice Minister of Digital Development, stated that if regulatory restrictions are eased, Kazakhstan could become a leading crypto hub in Central Asia.
In 2024, the country also launched a pilot project with its central bank digital currency (CBDC), which, according to officials, helped reduce wait times for value-added tax refunds.
CryptoCity: A Step Toward Digital Economic Growth
Madiyev, one of the project’s key figures, expressed hope that CryptoCity would attract developers, programmers, and IT specialists to Kazakhstan, contributing to local economic growth.
He added:
“Although the primary focus is currently on developing the regulatory framework, CryptoCity is already under construction.”
Madiyev emphasized that the city would feature free circulation of cryptocurrencies, crypto-friendly legislation, and recognition of crypto as a legitimate means of payment, and noted:
“These conditions must also be reflected in the country’s legal system.”
