In a major diplomatic development, the UN snapback mechanism against Iran has been activated, reinstating six previous UN Security Council sanctions starting on September 27.
On Friday, a resolution at the UN Security Council that aimed to extend confirmation of Iran’s compliance with its nuclear obligations failed to pass after receiving nine negative votes, triggering the process that brings back the sanctions.
The E3 nations — France, the United Kingdom, and Germany — initiated the 30-day process to activate the snapback mechanism, citing Iran’s breaches of the nuclear deal, particularly its continued uranium enrichment beyond agreed limits.
Iran’s Response
Tehran condemned the move, describing the European countries’ decision as politically motivated and without legal, ethical, or political legitimacy.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister warned that if the UN sanctions are reimposed, Iran will suspend its cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signed in Cairo.
Officials in Tehran also emphasized that the return of sanctions is “mostly psychological,” noting that unilateral U.S. sanctions remain more impactful.
International Reactions
China and Russia expressed concerns about escalating tensions following the activation of the snapback mechanism and urged diplomatic engagement.
European nations defended their decision, stating that Iran’s breaches of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) left them with no choice and that restoring diplomacy remains their ultimate goal.

Potential Implications
The reinstatement of UN sanctions is expected to increase economic pressure on Iran, especially in oil, banking, and technology imports.
On the diplomatic front, Tehran faces renewed global pressure to return to the negotiating table to de-escalate tensions and seek a resolution.
This development could also further strain Iran-West relations, intensifying regional rivalries and international alliances.
Possible Scenarios
Diplomatic Efforts: Tehran might present alternative proposals or engage in negotiations to delay or limit the sanctions’ impact.
Escalation and Retaliation: If Western powers push ahead, Iran could suspend additional nuclear commitments or cooperation with the IAEA.
Partial Compromise: Under international pressure, a new round of talks could result in limited or conditional sanctions relief if a mutually acceptable solution is found.
