Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed the latest U.S. Department of Labor report on employment as “manipulated” and “political,” accusing the Biden administration of doctoring the numbers to damage Republicans ahead of the 2024 election.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“In my opinion, today’s job numbers were manipulated to make Republicans – and me – look bad, just like those three ‘great’ days right before the 2024 Presidential Election.”
Referring to the substantial downward revision made to the employment data after the election, Trump added:
“These numbers were sharply revised down on November 15, 2024 – just days after the election – by over 818,000 jobs. A total scam!”
Trump also claimed he had ordered the firing of Erica McEnturfer, head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accusing her of being a political appointee of President Joe Biden and alleging that she falsified employment data.
According to the official report released Friday, the U.S. economy added just 73,000 jobs in July — significantly below the 106,000 forecasted by analysts. Additionally, employment figures for the previous two months were revised downward by a total of 258,000 jobs.
Trump has repeatedly accused government statistical agencies of political bias in the past, challenging their credibility and neutrality. His latest remarks are expected to spark fresh debate in the U.S. political sphere, especially as the country moves into the heart of the 2024 election campaign season.
