U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he expects to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods in return for Beijing’s commitment to restrict exports of fentanyl precursor chemicals, which have fueled America’s opioid crisis.

Tariffs are customs duties imposed on imported goods to make domestic products more competitive. While supporters believe tariffs protect local industries and reduce trade deficits, critics argue they raise prices and risk triggering trade wars.

Trump, who has made tariffs a key element of his economic agenda, aims to use them strategically to support American producers. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, he reiterated that tariff revenues could be used to lower personal income taxes.

In 2024, Mexico, China, and Canada accounted for 42% of total U.S. imports, with Mexico leading at $466.6 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Trump’s plan reportedly focuses on these three major trade partners as part of his broader economic strategy.
